My name is Joshua Mikhaiel, and I am a storyteller.
Storytelling is something we all do, all the time. It’s a way in which we understand ourselves, how we narrate our world.
Love stories triumph over all other genres; they are raw, genuine, precious, and bring out the most beautiful of all emotion. I think I’ve always been a storyteller, from writing and illustrating imaginary stories as a small child to my university studies in Journalism and Graphic Design. I have come to understand that whilst words offer us the narration of life, photographs offer the image and entity of life itself.
The inspiration for my work is what is in front of me, not merely a checklist of photos for the day. The more I travel, the more I see the different cultures and contexts that inform different Love Stories. Whilst based in NSW, Australia, I am always keen to travel and document places around the globe that teach and inspire and transform. No matter the tribe, nation, language or continent, it would be an honor to go on an adventure to tell your story.
Because ultimately, stories are what remain of us in the end.
- What do you love most about what you do? I love meeting people who are in love and telling their stories.. It's funny in some ways all weddings are the same, there is a formula of sorts, but at the same time they're all different. Everyone's story is unique and its such a joy to photograph people's stories.
- What is your advice for a healthy, long lasting relationship? Selflessness, when you stand up in front of your friends and family to declare your love for one another forever. What you're really doing is the most selfless thing you can do. If you can put yourself aside to look out for your partners interests above your own and both do that for each other than I think you're well on the way to a long and happy relationship.
- In my spare time I love collecting... Suitcases.. It's not the best habit and I've already got more than I could ever hope to use.. When I move house I literally don't need cardboard boxes because I have enough vintage suitcases to fit everything I own in.. quite absurd really. The only problem arrises when I lose the keys to the suitcases in the move and have to break them open like a piggy bank to get at my belongings.
- What gets you out of bed in the morning? God gets me out of bed in the morning. Mornings are not my friend.. but Jesus is and knowing that I'm loved by the God of the universe and that he's shown me how to go and love others gets me up out of bed and ready to take on any and every new day.
