White talks to Gabriela Colebrook

3

Gabriela Colebrook has got to be one of the sweetest most charming photographers we know. Happily for us, we got to catch up with her to find out a little more about what makes her tick.

How did you get into photography? I kind of fell into it and loved everything about it. I was hugely influenced by my creative parents. My mum had a job as an assistant for a famous fashion photographer overseas so SLR cameras were always around when growing up. Also, my parents ran their own handmade jewellery business for many years and would sell them at markets on the weekends, which meant we were always surrounded by amazingly talented and artistic people.

How long have you been a professional photographer for? I have been a professional photographer since 2005 and have worked in a variety of different areas including hospitality and retail. Photography is definitely where my heart lies. I can make a mean coffee too!

What do you love about what you do?  Oh, there’s so many things! I especially love my amazing couples; nothing beats being able to capture two people in love. I love “love!” (So cheesy I know, but I can’t help it!)

What’s the strangest shoot you’ve ever had to do?  A fashion shoot in an abandoned building. Studio flash lights would randomly stop working (there was an onsite electrician who had no idea why they kept doing that) then they would just start up again. We would hear weird sounds the whole time too. Then to top it off, we had a paranormal researcher drop by and do some readings using electronic instruments. He said there was very high paranormal activity going on. Needless to say we all worked that little bit quicker to get out of there!

What’s your personality like? Sunny. I am a very happy person who loves a chat. I am a romantic with a big heart and love being around my friends and family.

What makes you laugh? I love it when couples can be themselves and have fun. Nothing makes me laugh more when you’re being silly and cute around each other! Cry? I’m a sucker for shedding a tear or two during the ceremony, as well as during the father-of-the-bride speeches. l’m lucky I have a camera to cover my face!

What would you love to shoot but haven’t yet managed to?  Oh I would love to photograph a wedding in the Greek Islands.

How would you describe your photography? Beautiful and romantic. I’m always trying to bring these two qualities into my photography, not just from my amazing couples but from my surroundings as well. It always makes my heart flutter when I’ve found that perfect combination!

So in the current issue of white we have a spread full of your divine handiwork, except there’s one image that appears, err, a little unusual. So that’s not your strange wonky style of photography then?  Haha! No, not at all, but if people are into that then sure that’s ok too! It was supposed to be a beautiful photo of Andrea’s amazing handiwork at the reception. Rest assured we always make sure we capture the important details of your reception that you’ve put so much effort into!

Gabriela we love your work. What’s next for you? Oh many things! We have some exciting projects coming up collaborating with a few amazing artists and vendors that we are looking forward to as well as a trip to Bali at the end of the month.
