Great food, good music and a whole lotta love were what made Lauren + Hugo’s wedding day a sweet success! The cute couple enjoyed a relaxed ceremony which featured a gown hand-made by the bride, deep red blooms, and DIY details, followed by a fun, colourful reception with close family and friends.

Tell us about your proposal.

The way Hugo proposed was just so unbelievably ‘Hugo’. He loves pulling pranks, making jokes and leading people on (but in a good natured way!). About four months after a conversation where we told each other we wanted to get married, the topic came up again and Hugo said (read: lied) that he didn’t want to plan a wedding without buying me an engagement ring, but that he hadn’t given it much thought. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was a bit annoyed!

A couple of days later on a Friday evening, I came home from work expecting a night in front of the tv. I had my pajamas on and was sitting on the couch when Hugo put my laptop in my hands and asked me to show him some engagement rings that I liked so that he could start shopping and saving. I was doing that for about fifteen minutes with him looking over my shoulder when I noticed he seemed to be fumbling around his pocket. I dismissed it and kept googling vintage engagement rings. I showed Hugo a picture and said ‘I quite like this one’, and that was when he pulled out a box with a STUNNING ring and asked, “How about this one?”

He had spent the entire four months working on the ring. I was born in Canada but have lived in Australia for the past 20 years since I was 8 years old – so the ring he worked with (Melbourne jeweller) Tessa Blazey to design has two diamonds. One is a brilliant cut white flawless diamond he sourced from Canada (which is meant to represent me) and the other is an uncut champagne Australian diamond (which is meant to represent him). Needless to say I completely forgave him for the ‘lies and deception’ when I saw the incredibly beautiful, romantic and completely ‘me’ ring he had spent so much time and thought to create.

How did you know your partner was the one?

I’ve known that Hugo was the one for a long time – we’ve been together for ten years! Despite everything we’ve already experienced together, the novelty of finding him still hasn’t worn off. I still look at him sometimes and get this incredible bursting feeling inside, realising that he is officially ‘my person’ from here on out.

What is marriage to you?

Marriage to us is basically a continuation of what we started before we got married – it’s a commitment to building a life and to sharing everything life has to offer. The main difference is that we threw a pretty awesome party to make that commitment in front of the people we love.
