“I LOVE YOU MORE EACH DAY AND I WANT YOU TO ALWAYS BE HAPPY.”

THE PROPOSAL
Jørund and I aren’t the cliché kind of couple. I knew when he proposed it would be the most down to earth and modest proposal. For some reason I had a very strong intuition about it when it was about to happen, in February 2014. We were going to spend Valentine’s Day in Paris and I knew Jørund would not propose there, but I was kind of hoping so. So on February 12 I had a really bad day—I worked the whole day with a very strong migraine and Jørund started sending me messages asking when I was finished at work and if I could let him know when I catch my bus. I got a bit suspicious, but the migraine was so strong I didn’t think much about it. So when I came home he was in the kitchen cooking, wearing only an apron and I found that amusing and thought it was to cheer me up because I was having a difficult day, but I noticed he was a bit nervous. Then he turned to give me a hug and took a ring out of the apron’s pocket and proposed in the kitchen. I said yes.

AS A COUPLE …
We are first of all best friends to each other. We talk about everything and I know we are only happy when the other is happy. I trust Jørund with my life and I would take a bullet for him. We have been through difficult times, cultural differences (me being from Brasil and he being Norwegian), but we managed to adjust to each other and appreciate the best from each other’s culture. Jørund has always been a strong partner who cheered me up through difficult times and he never gave up on me. We do almost everything together. We love road trips, cooking for family and friends, quiet times at the cabin with a book and fishing. We spend a lot of time together.
Sometimes we talk about the most absurd things and we believe we are the right kind of weird for each other. We laugh a lot together and care a lot about each other, but we have our differences, as any other couple. We are stubborn and both have strong temperaments, but the most important thing is that we share the same values. We love family life, simple things, being in nature, fresh air, homemade food and binge-watching tv series.

Wedding vows

We recited a poem called “On Love” by Kahlil Gibran. —

Jørund’s part:

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep,
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.
Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Karla’s part:

Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night,
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

DEAR JØRUND
I hope we can continue as happy as we are and have been for the past five years as a couple and best friends. I love you more each day and I want you to always be happy. I hope we can be great parents to our baby growing inside my belly and that we can be a real team on this too. I am so looking forward to starting this new chapter of our history this summer. As I told you on our wedding day, it’s comforting being able to know our kids would be just fine if something bad happened to me and they had only you. You are the most reliable and kind person I’ve ever known and I feel so lucky to have you. I could not be happier that we chose each other to start a family and spend the rest of our lives together.

DEAR KARLA
I hope that we will continue to grow together as best friends. And to develop a loving family, meaning quiet and kind children, and that I continue tolerance for slight female madness. I am looking forward to growing old with you.
