Intuitive and Heart Felt Wedding Photographer - Tomek Photography

1
We’ve loved watching the shift in the wedding industry away from posed and uncomfortably cheesy photos towards natural, genuine and heart felt moments of true love. As a creative documentary photographer, Tomek from Tomek Photography has this unique and intuitive style that we ADORE. We can’t get enough of his photography and the way he engages with and captures his brides and grooms. We sat down with him to chat life, work, moments and marriage.
WHAT DO YOU OFFER AS A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
I think what I offer that is different is my heart. I wear it on my sleeve. I become so connected to my clients that more often than not we become lifelong friends.

HOW IS IT WORKING FOR YOURSELF?
Working for myself is the most incredible, liberating and rewarding experience I’ve had - in terms of work that is. I don’t think I could ever go back to working for someone else.

TOP MOMENT OF WORK IN 2017?
At the risk of sounding cliche, I didn’t have any singular ‘best moments’. I feel like I receive so much from each wedding, each client interaction in such a myriad of varying ways that it’s hard to pinpoint a singular moment. If I’m to be honest, I still carry around a broken heart and so, often I live vicariously through the ‘love’ I witness and maintain I receive so much from shooting weddings. It’s a strange yin-yang of affecting my broken heart and making me even more sad about it and symbiotically a type of therapy.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PHOTO YOU HAVE TAKEN AT A WEDDING?
This is my favourite image for a few reasons. Technically it’s nothing incredible. It’s shot with very little available light at a high iso, without flash. What I love about it however is the truth of it. The rawness. All day Ben (the groom) was so darn excited and kept reacting in these incredible ways - to all types of things. His joy and passion for his wife was completely palpable. I love that this has been captured in this image. It is also a reminder for me why I stay until the end of receptions. Often other photographers tell me that I will burn out offering unlimited coverage. Perhaps they are right but the day that occurs, I’ll stop shooting weddings. Sure, sometimes I get tired and sometimes I want to leave early but it’s moments like these that make me realise why I do what I do and also why it is that I stay until the end. It’s because I don’t want the couple to worry about time frames, nor do I. I want to be able to work freely and who knows when I will capture that one shot. That one shot, that for the rest of my life, I will say, that is the one.

WHAT IS MARRIAGE TO YOU?
Marriage to me is compromise. It is a sacred promise to love your partner through the mountains and the valleys. A lot of people exchange vows which state, for better or worse. Unfortunately, we live in an increasingly selfish society, one in which often pushes people in the direction of really only adhering to ‘for better.’ I’d walk through fire for my wife. That is if I ever find her.
