Eden + James

It was my 30th birthday, and I had planned a trip to the Hunter Valley with about 15 of our friends. I was all stressed out, frantically trying to make everything go smoothly. The night before the wine tour, James said he wanted to take me somewhere before we go (As I’m a bit of a lightweight, I assumed it was breakfast) so we got up early and James drove me to this secluded patch of bushland complete with a little bubbling brook—it was beautiful! He pulled out a picnic basket with all my faves, but then our dog, Theo, started rolling in something (probably poop) so I started yelling, trying to get up to stop him. While this was happening, James was trying to get my attention the whole time. It took me a second to realise he was down on one knee in front of me. “I was just wondering if you would marry me?” I nearly died (cue ugly crying) and of course I said yes! Soon afterwards, we went back to the house where the rest of our friends were cheering! We all went on to have a huge rager, dancing and laughing until the sun came up. That day was one of the happiest days of my life!

Well, after nearly eight years together, I would say we are a pretty laid-back couple. We’re pretty creative people—Eden with her design and me with my music. We both have the same values and expectations when it comes to our friends, our work and our relationship with each other. We definitely don’t agree on everything though, but I think that’s important in a relationship—we have our opinions and we believe in them, but we won’t put the other down or make them feel silly for thinking it. Even after all this time, our ideal Friday night would be to hang out with takeaway and some wine at home with our dog, Theo. We both have such a love for our little guy. He brings us so much happiness and is such a big part of who we are.

We often joke “It’s us against the world!” and some days, it does feel like that, but I will make you smile when you’re tired, and even after the worst day, I promise to make you feel safe. I will continue to love you because of your faults, not regardless of them. Our future is going to be an adventure of love and excitement—I will make you laugh as often as possible and tell you every day how much I love you. When someone truly loves you, you feel the most unbelievable feeling of gratefulness. Thank you for making me feel like the luckiest person every day. You are my best friend and I will love and respect who you are and who you’re yet to become, always.

Love isn’t something you can control. It makes you feel good on the inside and out, and you want to be around it all the time. I found that in you Eden—you are my best friend. You understand and support me in whatever I do. I wouldn’t know what I would be doing without you. You mean everything to me. You are my little nerd and even though at times a bit messy, I love you all the same! You are the sweetest and most caring person I have ever met and you surprise me every day. I know our life together will be long, happy and caring, with more dachshunds and some children in somewhere there too. I know you will continue to push me to be the best I can be and I promise I will be there for you, as you are for me.

James, I promise to laugh and cry with you. To love you when it is easy and when it’s hard. I promise to stand by you when you are strong and to stand for you when you cannot. You are my best friend and I will love and respect who you are and who you’re yet to become, always.

I, James, take you, Eden, to be my wife. I promise to always be your best friend, to build and to work as a team through the good times and the bad. I promise to support your dreams and respect differences, to always love you and be by your side through all the days and the nights of our lives.
