DIY Dream Wedding: Ashleigh + Cameron

2

How long was your engagement? Eight months, short and sweet.

The proposal: We were in Japan and planning to hike Mount Fuji. The day we arrived Cam popped his knee out of place while kneeling for a photo. Long story short he could barely walk, so instead of hiking we caught the bus to the 5th station, hobbled about 100m up the path where he (very slowly) got down on one knee and proposed. Afterwards we went on roller coasters at FujiQ!

How did you choose the venue? It was all a coincidence. We loved the venue Braeside at Mount Macedon and had planned all along for the family to stay there. While visiting, the owner Andrew suggested we check out the opening for Mount Macedon Winery which had just been purchased by Elisha and Dylan. The place wasn’t renovated and we had to use our imagination, but Elisha was amazing and that’s what became the deciding factor. We’re so happy we trusted her! The place turned out amazing and we couldn’t have asked for a better venue manager.

Wedding Theme: There was a really subtle rabbit theme (just a bit obsessed with our two pet rabbits and Cam’s surname means rabbit in Maltese), besides that relaxed, earthy and natural vibes.

Pretty much everything was DIY. The bunting, all signage including the main blackboard itself was handmade and hand drawn, the invites, the hanging photo frame for the photo booth, the hessian hoops with foliage. It wasn’t just a way to save money but to also feel really involved and enjoy every aspect of the planning process.

How did you choose the dress? My best friend had just been married so after helping her look for dresses I had an idea of the style I would already like. After Cam proposed in Japan we went straight to Vietnam. We decided to take a chance and see if a local tailor could create something I like. I gave them a few requests such as a loose, comfortable fit, show string straps, with some sort of floral appliqué. After spending an afternoon fabric hunting through Saigon markets and 48 hours later, they had made the perfect dress for me…We were so lucky.

What does marriage mean to you? Marriage means we get to be with our best friend for the rest of our life! It’s hard to describe how lucky you feel being able to find someone willing to put up with you for the rest of your life. We really see ourselves as teammates and there to support each other through anything and everything.

Advice for other couples planning a wedding: Have fun. You only ever get to do this once. And make the day about what you want. It’s easy to feel influenced by close family and friends and feel like you should do this or that, but at the end of the day everyone respects your decisions and it will make the day more authentic to the both of you.

What were your aisle, recessional and first dance songs? Photograph by Ed Sheeran, I See Love by Passenger, and We Found Love (acoustic version) by Tyler Ward ft. Jess Moskaluke.
