Jess & Ben: Better Together!

7

Grab your favourite beverage and take five with Jess as she shares the sweet things you don’t know about their big day but are soon to find out.

Ben and I are both Kiwis living in Sydney and met eight years ago working in Christchurch NZ. We both work in event management, I do the pre-planning and Ben has an operational focus so we make a great team. It’s been four-and-a-half years in these jobs now and our skills have become really complimentary so the planning and running of our wedding was seamless.

We really wanted our big day to be a true reflection of who we are, as individuals and as a couple: colourful, fun, natural and relaxed. We went a little DIY crazy, making 300 metres of bunting flags and colourful cushions for the venue. Our guests were welcome to take the pillows and lengths of bunting home as keepsakes. Some of the bunting has been on camping trips and is now decorating friends’ children’s bedrooms.

I really struggled to find the perfect wedding dress, but settled on a beautiful lace number by Grace Loves Lace. The ceremony was very relaxed. I walked down the aisle with both my parents to All I Want is You by Barry Louis Parker. Ben referred to brain eating zombies in his vows! The most emotional moment was after our pledge to each other when our celebrant asked our guests to stand up and make their own pledge to both of us. It was really overwhelming and a pivotal realisation that these people—our nearest and dearest friends and family—were there to support us and our union.

The reception was hilarious fun. We hired antique embroidered napkins, hand-painted our own table numbers, collected vintage NZ postcards to replace a guest book and served beautiful wine we selected ourselves hopping around the Wairarapa wine region vineyards. Our wedding cake was made of four different types of local NZ cheese. We danced the night away to an amazing local band who specially learnt our first dance song, Howlin’ for You by the Black Keys.
