The Elopement.

We arrived in the western Icelandic town of Stykkishólmur the day before our wedding to prepare and most importantly, to scope out locations for the ceremony. The only problem was that as soon as we arrived, we knew picking a spot would not be an easy feat. There wasn’t a single patch of blue sky above us and instead we felt a constant, steady drizzle of rain. We managed to shortlist a handful of locations in the small town of ~1,200 people, including a couple of indoor options, but we had our hearts set on the first location we stumbled upon: next to the iconic red lighthouse on Súgandisey, a small, basalt island just north of the town. However, with the weather as wet as it was, and not to mention the gigantic cruise ship docked in the harbour, we knew we’d likely have to resort to one of our “plan B” options.

The next morning, we looked out the window and our already tense stomachs sunk a little lower. It was dark and misty outside and we soon learned that rain was in the forecast for the next 12 hours. But of course we knew we couldn’t let this ruin our day and we had to make the most of what mother nature dealt us. So we got ourselves out of bed, had a wonderful breakfast with our photographer, Daniel, dressed and readied ourselves in our wedding gear, and marched onward to conquer—and enjoy!—the day.

We had a few other shoots planned for the morning and had decided we wouldn’t give up on our first ceremony choice just yet. By the time we reached the small lookout island in the afternoon, something funny happened. The rain had momentarily let up as we walked up the wooden stairs toward the scenic lighthouse, and when we reached the very spot, the grey sky parted and there we saw an indelible, wide strip of blue with the sun shining in the distance. Mother nature was even kinder to us because as the ceremony was underway, a vivid, panoramic rainbow came into the foreground, making for an even more memorable and imperfectly perfect day.

How did you know your partner was the one?

It’s tough for us to pinpoint a single moment. From the moment we met, we always admired each other’s positivity, sense of humour, and love for family, travel, food, and all that life has to offer; so much so that the more time we spent together, the more we realized it felt unnatural to be apart.

What do you love most about your partner?

Candice: What I love most about Nick is that no matter what, I know he will always be there for me and I can count on him for anything.
Nick: From her witty quips to her keen sense of adventure, I love and am grateful for Candice’s creativity and knowing that there will never be a dull moment with her.
